What's Considered a Dental Emergency?

Toothache

Answer

Symptoms may include: infection, swelling, pain, redness and/or heat possibly accompanied by a fever.

Dental pain should be evaluated for cause and severity as soon as possible. If you see any of these signs, contact an emergency dentist or go to the closest emergency room immediately. Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetaminophen) may be taken to manage the pain until you are treated. A cold compress may help reduce swelling.

Broken Tooth

Answer

If a tooth is broken, chipped or knocked out through a forceful incident, it’s important to call your dentist immediately. We can advise you on the next steps to support the broken tooth. Try to gather the pieces of the broken tooth to bring to the emergency dentist. Pain or sensitivity in the tooth can be lessened with Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetaminophen).

Broken Dental Work

Answer

If you have lost or damaged a filling, crown or bridge, gather the broken pieces (if possible) to bring to your dentist. If the broken dental work is accompanied by some discomfort and/or sensitivity, we will advise you on temporary pain relief until your appointment.

Bleeding

Answer

Some bleeding after dental procedures such as an extraction, is normal for up to two days after the procedure. Be sure to follow the instructions provided by your dentist. If the bleeding intensifies or progresses beyond three days past your procedure, call an emergency dentist or go to your local hospital emergency.

If you are having trouble breathing or cannot control the bleeding, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency as soon as possible.
