Root Canal Therapy
Save Your Damaged Tooth
Root canal therapy is needed when tooth decay reaches the nerve chamber. It’s also used in some cases when a tooth breaks and bacteria affect the nerves. Root canal treatment removes the bacteria, or dying tissue, from inside the tooth and cleans the root canal(s). If the infection is allowed to persist, it can destroy the nerves, eventually causing the tooth to die.
Above all, root canal treatment aims to help keep your tooth and avoid extraction. Avoiding extraction means preventing other extensive dental procedures and the unfortunate health complications that arise when bacteria from the infection enters the bloodstream.
If a serious infection or extensive damage is involved, we may refer you to a Surrey endodontist (root canal specialist).
Root Canal Treatment: What to Expect
After applying anesthesia prior to your root canal therapy, Surrey dentist Dr. Bajwa carefully accesses the inner chamber to remove bacteria and diseased pulp. Once clean, the chamber is filled and thoroughly sealed off to prevent any further infection.
In most cases, a customized crown is fitted to the tooth’s top to restore its structure and provide protection. The end result: your natural smile is preserved and your comfort is dramatically improved.
Root canal therapy can be completed in one visit, although a second visit may be needed to fit the dental crown.

I’m dreading having a root canal treatment. What are my options around this?
You’re not alone: root canals have developed a bad reputation for being time-consuming and painful. You’ll be happy to hear that new technology enables root canal therapy to be faster and practically pain-free. While avoiding the procedure isn’t an option (ignoring infection will only lead to bigger problems, more pain and extraction), we can review our anaesthesia techniques and sedation options to help you feel more at ease.
How long will the treated tooth last? Will I be faced with another root canal?
When successfully performed, and if you practice excellent oral hygiene (including regular visits to your Surrey dentist), root canal therapy should last a lifetime. In rare cases the infection may reoccur and the treatment is repeated.
What is the recovery period after root canal therapy?
While many people immediately resume eating and drinking as before, tissue inflammation may cause discomfort for a few days. This can be helped with over-the-counter pain medication.
